The Unicorn Players gave one of their best performances of the season at Palace Avenue Theatre, Paignton, last night when they presented “Sailor, Beware,“ The cast made the best of the witty down-to-earth dialogue by Philip King and Falkland Cary, and from the opening scene the stage was set for laughter. Sybil Ewbank was outstanding as the pessimistic, nagging, Mrs. Hornett, who, even on the eve of her daughter’s wedding, looks with some suspicion on her future son in-law, Able Seaman Tufnell. When not engaged making last minute arrangements for the great event she busies herself warning her daughter (Cordelia Crawshaw) ”You know what sailors are." The long suffering Mr Hornett, charmingly played by Howard Lamb, is meanwhile giving the bridegroom Tufnell, the benefit of his experience.
One of the few characters slow to give advice is the best man, Tufnell’s shipmate (Neil Phelps), whose retiring disposition is amply compensated for by the interfering busy-body of a neighbour portrayed by Myrtle Devenish. The person who causes most laughter, however, is Astrid Andersen, who gives a delightful performance as the spinster aunt who breaks down whenever marriage, church aisles or wedding bells are mentioned. Excellent support is given by James Irwin, Elizabeth Noctor and Anthony Benson.
