Investigation

The first production in English, in a translation by J W James, of Ugo Betti’s ‘Ispezione’ , and, I believe, still the only time this fine play has been produced in this country. Bristol’s entry in the 1956 Student Drama Festival. The student cast incuded no less than three who subsequently made careers in the professional theatre – Elizabeth Shepherd, Michael Graham Cox, and Henry Woolf.

Observations

  1. On 29th September 2010 at 6:38 p.m., J W James noted:

Having been successful in getting permission from the Betti estate for this premiere, we were hrrified, halfway through rehearsals, to receive a demand from the Lord Chancellor’s Office for cuts before we could proceed. No real explanation for this demand was given, but we were foced, reluctantly, to comply.
