Observations

  1. On 4th July 2017 at 9:08 a.m., ovaltrack noted:

“David Baron [Harold Pinter], as a more than usually prosperous caricature of a writer fascinated by the black art, is less well served by the playwright. The part is comparatively small and offers little scope for the actor’s art – but again first impressions are intriguing.” Torquay Herald Express, 2 October 1956

    The Stage 11 October 1956:
After sixteen weeks of variety, the New Malvern Company received an enthusiastic welcome at the opening of their winter season of repertory at the Pavilion, Torquay, last week, before a capacity audience which included the Mayor and Mayoress. Alderman and Mrs. I. Joseph, and members of the Town Council. The choice of opening play was a happy one. John Van Druten’s sparkling comedy, Bell, Book and Candle." It involves only five characters, and each was beautifully drawn. Vivien Merchant and Alec Ross, in the leading roles, gave two very exciting performances, and their warmth and vitality have already made them a host of friends. As two other supernaturally gifted members of the family, Ian Curry and Dorothy Clement contributed a fair share of the laughs, and David Baron made a great impression as the author fascinated by black magic. John Allen was the producer, and Robert Thompson was responsible for the setting .
