Joe E Brown was scheduled to take over from Sid Field for a month, but in the event Field was admitted to a nursing home a week before his holiday was due to begin, so understudy Harry Brunning filled in before Brown’s arrival. Brown was originally due to finish on 24th September, but as it turned out he continued till nearly Christmas.
When Field died five weeks after returning, Brunning went on again while Leslie Henson was rehearsing as a permanent replacement. When the London run finished, Henson went on a lengthy provincial tour with the London company, but with Joyce Barbour substituting for Athene Seyler.
