I worked on this as dayman electrician and remember John Duttine playing Frank Hunter swinging a walking stick in the opening scene like a golf club but unfortunately hitting the stage a bit hard. the stick broke and the hook end flew into the auditorium hit the circle front and dropped into the stalls.

    Hi Nick Peel,
I have to release John Duttine as guilty party here as actually it was he who saved the day! It was in fact I, playing Taplow, who broke the stick, sending it hurtling to the back of the stalls. He, like the consummate professional that he is, handed me another and said “Try again, and not quite so hard this time!”
The person nearest to the missile as it landed (luckily not hitting anyone) met me at Stage door after the show, brandishing the largest part of the stick. They were given it as a memento!
