AGAINST TRADITION – which decrees that deaths take place offstage, the director took a brave decision and showed Medea killing her children in a Dumb Show. Diana Rigg and two children appeared “aloft” behind a (perspex ? ) screen which allowed spectators to see a lot of blood. I have a clear memory of the handprints of the children but cannot say whether there was any sound or musical accompaniment. Hitchcock’s Psycho may have prompted the director’s thought but though the classical rule was broken there was definitely no aural outrage.
