Observations

  1. On 6th May 2019 at 9:05 p.m., mickeyboyc noted:

My grandfather, Eric Gledhill, appeared in this production.

I have a programme, from the De La Warr Pavilion, Main Hall (Entertainments Manager – Edmund Rhodes). The production commenced on Easter Monday, April 10th, 1939 with a matinee, and carried on through the week. The whole production was under the personal supervision of W. Johnstone-Douglas on behalf of the Chanticleer Company, and Matthew Forsyth, on behalf of the Forsyth Players.
    Characters:
    Mr Gill – Black Gifford
    Mrs Gill – Marjorie Manning
    Edward Gill – John Irvine
    Kate Gill – Sydney Malcolm
    Laura Rivers – Dingle Newton
    Julian Bromley – Ian Glennie
    Albert Porter – Eric Gledhill
    Patty Moss – Mary Mackenzie
    George – Laurence Hardy
    Bella Manchester – Venetia Stanley
    Flora Grantley – Barbara Wyndham
    Amelia – Ray Dudley
Chorus of Guests, Thespians, and Regateers – Felicity Bryans, John Haines, Pamela Harrison, Daphne Peretz, Venetia Stanley, Barbara Wyndham, Philip Fox, Philip Hobson, Edward Thomas, Erin Tosi, Richard Tull, Henry Worthington

Municipal Orchestra under the direction of Walter Collins
    Director – Matthew Forsyth
    Business Manager – Estelle Giton
    Stage Manager – D. Pullein-Thompson
Assistant Stage Manager – Richard Tull

Smoking permitted – Abdullas for choice(!)

This Theatre is disinfected throughout with Jeyes’ Fluid(!)

I also have a tour list associated with this play, from August 23rd to December 6, to places up and down the country. I presume the same cast and crew were involved. The list is as follows:
    August 23 – Pier – Eastbourne
    August 30 – Theatre Royal – Birmingham
    September 6 – Opera House – Manchester
    September 13 – King’s Theatre – Hammersmith
    September 27 – Theatre Royal – Brighton
    October 4 – Grand Theatre – Leeds
    October 18 – Theatre Royal – Huddersfield
    October 25 – Theatre Royal – Newcastle
    November 1 – Lyceum Theatre – Edinburgh
    November 8 – King’s Theatre – Glasgow
    November 15 – Wimbledon Theatre
    November 22 – New Theatre – Oxford
November 29 – New Theatre Royal – Norwich
    December 6 – Memorial Theatre – Stratford-on-Avon

Then at the bottom it says: May be altered.
I have put in the alterations made by hand on the list. I also have a publicity still of my grandfather in his role as Albert Porter, the bashful lover.
