Observations
-
First performance of the production at the Kremlin Theatre, Moscow on September 9th 1965.

I saw this 1966 production of “Love for Love” when I was studying Drama at Dartford College of Physical Education. I really wanted to see Olivier performing but remember being annoyed by some of the audience cheering and clapping the first time he made an entrance! I have the original programme and will upload it.

I begin to despair. It looks as if the wretched virus may disrupt everything for years, if not decades. Last year I had printed, for private distribution, a keepsake for what would have been the ninetieth birthday of my favourite actress Dorothy Tutin. It included a Houston Rogers portait of the actress as herself and, from the Harvard archive, one of her as Viola in Stratford’s 1958 Twelfth Night. I would like to make a small series and follow with keepsakes for Geraldine McEwan and Mary Ure. I have a print of a Zoe Dominic portrait of the former as herself. I need one of her as Angelica in the 1965 Love for Love, by the National Theatre at the Old Vic. But the Zoe Dominic archive, it seems, is uncatalogued and undigitised. I cannot even find out where it is. And the National’s archive department looks like being closed for ever. If I could find a mazagine photograph – Plays and Players, Theatre World? – it would lack sufficient definition, but at least I would know what I’m looking for. But the public libraries, also, look like being closed for ever. Being the same age as these actresses, I may not have much time. Has anyone any ideas? – Anthony Baker

All looks like being well. I have permission to use a photograph by Zoe Dominic as Angelica in Love for Love, – Anthony Baker
