Hamlet

EXHAUSTION. Nicol Williamson, who has quite a reputation for accepting mighty theatrical challenges and taking colossal roles in his stride, has seen the warning light. Apart from playing Hamlet at the Round House every evening, he spends the day filming the same part until shortly before the evening performance. Small wonder he threw down his sword and cloak on the Round House stage the other evening, feeling he could go on no longer. He was prepared to pay for every seat, but after a ten-minute pause, he returned to the stage and gave a performance which earned a standing ovation.” – Eric Johns (editorial), The Stage 2nd April 1969 (page 8)

Observations

  1. On 24th March 2021 at 2:31 p.m., tang noted:

I saw this production in the spring of 1969. I don’t know the date, but Nicole Williamson suffered some kind of medical problem during the performance and had to leave the stage. He excused himself strongly to the audience. There was a pause for about 20 minutes before he returned and finished with bravado.
