Observations

  1. On 24th April 2024 at 4:13 p.m., multirigby noted:

When I was six years old (!) we went as a family to see Anthony and Cleopatra at the Royal Opera House, Manchester, May 1951. Goodness knows why, but maybe they couldn’t get a babysitter. The performance was so enthralling and magical and compelling that when it finished, I refused to move from my seat, announcing that I wanted to see it again. Previous experience of the cinema would allow me to do that: you just sat there till the next performance started. Of course I didn’t understand the play at that age, but the atmosphere, block stage sets and diaphanous tall curtains, and sheer talents of Lawrence Olivier and his wife Vivian Leigh as Anthony and Cleopatra were riveting, never to be forgotten. I can see it now….
