This play gets a mention in Ned Sherrin’s memoir. He tells the story of how my mum (Pat Ashton) took over from Barbara Windsor when her voice gave out. She was the understudy but was already in the play as Velma Sombolini, so had not learnt all Marie Lloyd’s lines. They made a “Brechtian” compromise whereby two people read Marie’s lines from the side of the stage and my mum sang the songs. I was there on the first night to see the show which was a great story of rags to riches and pompous judiciary. And saw it a second time when the audience were told what was going to happen but after the show nobody wanted their money back.
I still have the signed soundtrack album where Ned Sherrin thanks my mum for being the ‘other’ Marie.
