Lunt-Fontanne Theatre

The original Globe Theatre was built by producer Charles Dillingham. He lost his fortune in the 1929 Wall Street crash and the Globe was foreclosed and converted into a cinema in 1932. The theatre was bought in 1957 and renamed the Lunt – Fontanne Theatre in 1957 in honour of husband and wife actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. They made their farewell Broadway appearance at the new theatre in it’s first production “The Visit”. Coincidentally they also opened a new theatre in London (the Royalty Theatre, Kingsway) with the same play .
