Hayes Theatre, New York

The theatre, built by Winthrop Ames, opened in 1912 as the Little Theatre. Ames retired in 1931 and sold the building to the New York Times Company. For a time it was used as a radio studio and then became a venue for lectures and concerts under the name New York Times Hall from 1941 to 1959. From 1959 to 1963 it was leased by ABC television and then re-opened as the Little in November 1963. In 1964 it was briefly renamed the Winthrop Ames Theatre in memory of its builder but in 1965 it once again became a broadcasting studio and remained so until 1974 when once again it re-opened as the Little Theatre. In July 1983 it was renamed for the actress Helen Hayes when the theatre then named for her was demolished as part of the site for the new Marriott Marquis hotel incorporating the Marquis Theatre. The theatre closed in 2016 for repairs and renovations and re-opened in March 2018, still in memory of Helen Hayes but with its name shortened to the Hayes Theater.
