Theatre Royal, Bristol (pre formation of Bristol Old Vic Company)

In 1942 the somewhat dilapidated Theatre Royal was sold by auction and bought for the people of Bristol. From 1943 some productions were mounted as an “offshoot” of the Old Vic, London hence the name Bristol Old Vic. It wasn’t until 1946 that the “Bristol Old Vic Company” was created with its first “official” production “The Beaux’ Stratagem”. Since that time the Theatre Royal has been the home of the Bristol Old Vic Company and the name of the company has become synonymous with the name of the theatre.

Therefore for the sake of consistency it seems appropriate that all listings after 1946 should be under the name Bristol Old Vic – Theatre Royal and all previous productions listed here.
