Playhouse Theatre
Opened as “Royal Avenue Theatre” but subsequently became known as just the “Avenue Theatre”.
Reconstruction of the theatre started in 1905 but was delayed when part of Charing Cross Station collapsed and the theatre was badly damaged.
Renamed “The Playhouse” it opened on 28th January 1907.
In 1951 it became a BBC studio and many radio programmes were recorded here until 1976. After this the theatre was dark and in danger of demolition.
In 1987 the theatre was restored to it original 1907 designs re-opening in October with the musical “Girlfriends”. Since then ownership of the theatre has changed hands several times with ATG theatres acquiring it in 2013.
