Oliver Smith

Designer – notable contributions to the Theatre, Films, Ballet & Opera. Since 1944, when he designed and sponsored the now historic musical “On The Town”, his Broadway musicals include “My Fair Lady”, “West Side Story”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Brigadoon”, and “Hello Dolly”. He also designed the Metropolitan operas “Martha” and “La Travista”, the ballets “Fancy Free” and “Fall River Legend” and the films “Guys and Dolls”, “Oklahoma”, and “Porgy & Bess”. His Broadway plays include “Night of the Iguana”, “Barefoot in the Park”, “The Odd Couple”, “Plaza Suite”, and “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”. He often combined decor with producing as he did for “In the Summer House”, “Clearing in the Woods”, “No Exit”, “Billion Dollar Baby”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright”, “Natural Affection” and “Indians”. He was also a highly regarded painter, whose works have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts.
