Ruth Naylor

Ruth Naylor, Australian soprano, died on October 16, 1976, aged 68. She was born in Adelaide and after winning an overseas scholarship studied in London with Clive Carey, and then in Berlin, Munich, and Salzburg. She joined Sadler’s Wells Opera in 1932 and sang there regularly until 1940 where her repertory included Susanna, Rosina, Zerlina in both Fra Diavolo and Don Giovanni, Adele, Violetta, Nedda, and Sophie. She sang at Covent Garden in 1934, 1935, 1937 and 1938 as Rosina, Musetta, Adele, Nedda, and Sigrid in Lloyd’s The Serf. In 1942 she sang Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann at the Strand Theatre, London; in 1944 Violetta with the Carl Rosa Opera; and in 1945 Rosalinda in the Korngold adaptation of Die Fledermaus, Gay Rosalinda at the Palace Theatre, conducted by Richard Tauber. Her last appearances were at the Cambridge Theatre, 1947–8, as Musetta.
