Author and playwright and born Frank Sutton-Vane he adopted the name Sutton Vane for his published works.

Confusingly his eldest son, actor and playwright, Vane Hunt Sutton-Vane also wrote plays under the name Sutton Vane. His early acting appearances were as Vane Sutton-Vane
