George Thomas Balfour

Born in New York 1900, his father worked for a shipping company and George spent his first seven years or so living in Barbados. The family then moved to Helensburgh, near Glasgow. Around 1920 his parents moved to Surrey and George attended Wye Agricultural College in Kent. He stayed on there as an instructor, taking up farming in Surrey in the 1930’s. He worked in Rep in Folkestone for a year in 1937 with the Arthur Brough Company. In 1939 his parents were living at the Leas in Folkestone and his father was an ARP warden. George went on to work for the Agricultural Advisory Service, marrying his secretary in 1949 and bringing up three children in Guildford. He died in 1980.
