Madge D’Alroy

Madge D’Alroy was born Madge Rutter in Hull in 1905. Her mother Edith Adeline Collier was a dancer from a theatrical family. Her father David Rutter was an engineer and part-time concert party manager.
Madge appeared on stage as a dancer from the age of 12.

In 1922 she married Alf Jones (stage name Alf D’Alroy). He was a ventriloquist, magician and comic actor. They appeared on stage together and with some their children until the early 1950s.

During the 1950s Madge became wardrobe mistress at Carl Rosa (later Saddlers Wells). Alf was a dresser there although he continued to perform onstage until his death in 1972.

Madge joined the Sheffield Playhouse in the early 1960s as wardrobe mistress and stayed there until it’s closure. She transferred to the Crucible and continued to work there until shortly before her death in 1975.
