Lij Sol Ujamaa

Lij Sol Ujamaa was born in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica. He spent his juvenilia and adulthood in this town. As a youngster he attended the local high school – St. Jago. Lij may be described as a multi-media artist – painter, sculpture, writer, playwright, director of plays, filmmaker, set designer, costume designer, fashion designer, events promoter/producer and poet. Lij studied in London and acquired a degree in Law and
a Masters degree in Social Policy and Criminology. While in London, Lij
submerged himself in the theatre scene
and became well known as a performing
poet, playwright, director, set designer
and producer of plays. He is currently
completing a book of poetry, a children’s’
story and a socio-historical account of the Ras Tafarian movement. The reoccurring narrative arc in Lij’s literary work, centres
on the appreciation of a wholly African and
Caribbean sensibility. In this respect, the
socio-psychic site of this group is
represented in various settings. However,
while Lij’s perspectives are universal, some themes notable around – anti-racist strategies, black resistance and gender are emphasised in his creative and
artistic pursuits.
