Plus a few others at Drama School and School!

My first involvement with the theatre was at the age of Seven when I wrote a six episode thriller that we performed at my junior school entitled “The Snake Pit” can´t tell you if it was up to much but we had to perform two episodes one day because the class wanted to know what happened next.
My First appearance with an adult Drama Group was at the age of 8 for the St Lukes Church Dramatic Society. I played a gypsy boy who had to dance in a circle with a lot of other people and I kept my eyes closed the whole time!
My next involvement was when my sister volunteered me to be in a One Act Festival play for The Kingstanding Community Centre Dramatic Society because they couldn´t find a boy to go on stage in a pair of trunks (I wasn´t shy in those days!). I was lucky enough to win the best young actor award and I think that was the start of my love of the theatre.
I played a number of roles with the Kingstanding Group before leaving to go to The Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art.
I was very fortunate to play many great parts during my time there; including Val Xavier in Orpheus descending by Tennessee Williams; Petre Trofimov in The Cherry Orchard by Chekov; Barney in The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder; and the pop singer in Expresso Bongo (The Cliff Richard part in the film),I actually wore the original Gold Jacket used in the film – I was thinner then! I also managed to direct and play the part of Aston in The Caretaker by Harold Pinter.
All in all my time at Drama School was the greatest time of my life, in many ways and in my final term I was fortunate enough to win the B.B.C. Drama Award and earn a contract with the B.B.C. Radio Repertory Company.
I have been fortunate enough during my short career to work with many wonderful actors including, Dame Edith Evans, Dame Sybil Thorndike, Wilfrid Pickles, George Cole, Derek Jacobi, Julie Christie, Andrew Sachs, Christopher Lee, Alfred Marks, Leslie
Phillips , Wilfred Bramwell and many more. They taught me a lot and I hope that in some way I have been able to pass on a little of what I have learnt to my fellow actors.
