Charles Cusick Smith

Charles Cusick Smith was born in Glasgow, and studied at Glasgow School of Art and Post Graduate at The Slade School of Art London.
Internationally Charles has designed many Operas and Ballets including: Giselle for the Greek National Ballet, Giselle at the English National Ballet, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliachi and Giselle in Estonia; Nabucco, Aida, Don Carlos, The Wall, Ottello, Der Rosenkavalier and Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliachi ,Co-Design with Phil R Daniels My Fair Lady Hello Dolly , Spamalot , 39 steps in Germany and Il Trovotore and Spartacus in Hong Kong.

European premieres include Follies and Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd (Best Production 1990 TMA) as well as the European premiere of Ladies Night , For the Pop Band Boyzone “ Something Else Tour “ and Rock Around the Dock (Granada TV).
His Musical design credits in the UK include Oklahoma, Dusty, Hot Stuff, Heavenly Bodies, West Side Story, Slice of Saturday at Night, Chicago, Rock Hard, Hold Tight It’s 60’s Night, Company, In the Midnight Hour, The Guardsman and Cliff the Musical.
Recent productions include Heartbreak House and Outlying Islands for Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Blithe Spirit (Vienna’s English Theatre 2007), Passing Places (Pitlochry Festival Theatre 2007), Wild East (Not the National Theatre Company 2006), Three Musketeers (2006) and The Nutcracker (2007) (both for NBT), Cinderella (Co-Design at the Lyceum Sheffield) and Sinbad the Sailor (Co-Design at York Theatre Royal, Dec 2007).Duet for One (Vienna’s English Theatre 2007),
Future projects in 2009), Casse – Noisette in Toulouse France April and Three Musketeers (Estonia, April 2009). The Life of Stuff Bus Stop , Nana , Dr Angelus ,Little shop of horrors.Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

Charles was twice awarded for his designs in the UK most notably the T.M.A. “Best Designer” 1993 and the Evening News Award “Best Designer” 1986.
