Jimmy Clitheroe

He never grew taller than 4ft 3 ins, so in 1936 he took a job on the stage, as a member of a juvenile troupe of children. In the Second World War he became ‘feed’ to a comedian in a variety act, and by the 1950s had become a stage comedian in his own right. He began taking work in radio from 1955, where his lack of height was also not a disadvantage, playing comedy roles. The BBC eventually gave him his own radio show, in the late 1950s, which ran for 16 years. He played child roles in a handful of films, but was highly successful playing children on radio and on television. From 1944 onwards, he was doing summer season and pantomime every year, and touring in variety: his stage career lasted until 1963, when his sudden television success gave him very little time for other work. He then starred in his own tv show on ITV from 1963 until 1968. In 1972 he effectively retired, when his long running radio show ended, having worked constantly in show business since 1936. He died in 1973.
