Nepal is a theatre of colors, rituals and folklore. A theatre that evolved among the lived experience of people who cultivated fields in the lush plains in the south, tilled terraced valleys in the hills, and kept herds in the high mountains. Hindu, Buddhist and indigenous rituals constantly provide energy for the stage.

Established in Kathmandu in 1982, Aarohan theatre group has presented classics of other parts of the world to the Nepali audience; some in their original forms and some adapted to the Nepali cultural sensibility. During the period of these three decades, Aarohan has celebrated the cultural dynamism. Its guiding principle is “every voice has a place in this country with immense diversity”. It has established highly artistic theaters for the proscenium and has fostered socially committed ones for the streets and villages.

Arohan pursue theatre as politics, as a form of resistance to the passivity by globalized consumer-oriented mass–media. Arohan organizes international drama festival every two year. Conducting theatre workshops to share expertise in theatre technique among theatre personnel and social activists is its regular function.

Aarohan has performed its plays in India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Korea, Thailand, Norway and Denmark. Since 2003, Aarohan has been running a theatre centre and a theatre school in Kathmandu. It has been running a theatre centre in Biratnagar also.
