Woza Albert!

The first UK revival of this play originally created for the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, by actors Percy Mtwa and Mbongeni Ngema wioth director Barney Simon and presented at the Edinburgeh Festival, Riverside Studios and The Bloomsbury Theatre in 1983.
This new production, co-produiced by Temba and the Leicester Haymarket was so succesful that it was revived twice for UK tours and for tours to Europe. Somme critics said:
‘Brilliant, magnificent, moving, arousing, a tour de force – they all apply. This is the production that you spend years buying theatre tickets in the hope of seeing – that one marvellous moment when it all comes together. This is the one you watch theatre for…. It all works as a whole. Incisive, intelligent direction; economical set and props that don’t waste an artefact; acting of a standard that you don’t expect to have guaranteed in the West End or at Stratford.’ BBC Leicester, September 1986

‘It is a hypnotic performance……. Alby James’ direction has a stinging energy, changing pace and mood..’ Manchester Evening News, 24 October 1986

‘if you are lucky, going to the theatre can be a pleasure. Just occasionally it can seem like a privilege.’ Birmingham Post & Mail, 1986

‘…quite rightly, Temba Theatre’s well-pitched touring production of this very dark comedy received a standing ovation.’ The Independent, 20 January 1987
