Observations
-
This was a production when the Open Air Theatre invited Friends to become extras. I joined in about six performances taking three roles – a spear carrier, a guest at the banquet – with a speaking role, in unison with the other: “Our duties and the pledge!” – and a flaming torch carrier for the closing scene. It was an exciting experience with plenty of interaction with the cast and crew both on stage at rehearsals and backstage during performances. I remember, particularly, David Gooderson’s hilarious portrayal of the Porter and the cast’s own revue night when they amused us all with their anarchic sketches (for cast and crew only). What a privilege!

When I went to one of these performances, it was getting dark and a bit stormy. When Ms McAuliffe spoke the line ‘“The raven himself is hoarse / That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan / Under my battlements.” a large black bird, possibly a crow, launched itself from a nearby tree and flew across the stage, cawing. The entire audience shivered! I’d just like to add that this was the best Macbeth I’ve ever seen.
