Grand Guignol (season 3)
A third portmanteau of Grand Guignol plays at the Granville, comprising ROCOCO by Frederick Witney, SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT by H F Maltby, THE OLD WOMEN by André de Lorde, THE MASK by H M Harwood and F Tennyson Jesse, and Witney’s COALS OF FIRE (previously seen in the Granville’s first season).
Tod Slaughter starred in three of the five plays, appearing in drag for THE OLD WOMEN.
“The third series of Grand Guignol thrillers presented at the Granville Theatre last night was more horrific than usual, due to the fact that Tod Slaughter, the superb blood-curdler, has been added to the cast.” – ‘Blood-curdling’, Newcastle Evening Chronicle 3rd August 1945 (page 1)
“In André de Lorde’s THE OLD WOMEN, Tod Slaughter appears as an old murderess who gouges out the eyes of a young girl – a fellow inmate of a lunatic asylum. In this horrifying scene… Mr Slaughter ‘polishes off’ the victim in his inimitable style.” – ‘The Granville: Grand Guignol’, The Stage 9th August 1945 (page 1)
