Trader Mother Courage, following the armies of the Thirty Years’ War with her cart of various wares from shirts to sausages, fiercely protects her family from the bloodshed that surrounds them. But in a world that hovers between war and peace, events eventually overtake her, robbing her of the children she holds dear.

Play description
This play was first performed in 1941. Mother Courage’s business is war. She trades in brandy, boots and belts, endlessly dragging her children across Europe whilst attempting to protect them from the war’s devastating effects.
