Observations

  1. On 18th January 2024 at 2:33 a.m., EvilTwinBob noted:

Reviews: “Apart from the novelty of Jessica Tandy doubling Viola and Sebastian, the two outstanding performances were an almost unrecognisable Laurence Olivier as Sir Toby and John Abbott as Malvolio” (Times 24/02/1937)

New Statesman found fault with aspects of Tandy’s and Olivier’s performances, and thought Marius Goring gave the best performance of the evening. (New Statesman 06/03/1937)

“Immeasurably the best thing in this production is the Feste of Marius Goring – a worn clown, stark, tragic, a stab in the heart of fun. Never have I seen the baiting of Malvolio in the prison better or more mercilessly done – and here John Abbott, not overweening enough in Malvolio’s overweening passages, begins a fine performance that leaves a deep impression. Alec Guinness as Sir Andrew does well, and Ivy St. Helier plays Maria as though she had been playing Shakespeare all her life. She may stay in ”legitimate’ for the rest of her career if she chooses." (Herbert Farjeon in the Sunday Pictorial 28/02/1937)
