Call Mr. Robeson

Paul Robeson is a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. As he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor and denied performing or travelling opportunities. As emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career. Features some famous songs and speeches, including ‘Ol’ Man River’. Winner ‘best male performer’ Brighton Fringe 2008. ‘Top pick!’ (DCTheatreScene.com, 2009).

Play description

Tayo Aluko has been shaping and honing this biographical one man show about the life of Paul Robeson for some years now. The set is fairly standard – a suited Aluko stands on a memento-strewn stage and recounts the events of Robeson’s life, occasionally pausing to sing, accompanied by Michael Conliffe on piano.
