Portraits
“The author and director wish to record the deep impression made on them by reading Michael Holroyd’s definitive biography of Augustus John.” – programme note
Rachel Kempson was originally announced for the role of Dorelia. (‘Regional’, The Stage, 26th March 1987.)
Simon Ward was assaulted on returning home after a performance in early October: “Simon Ward went on stage three times with a shattered skull and a huge blood clot on his brain. But the 45-year-old star didn’t realise he was flirting with death until he had a brain scan.” (‘Star Simon brained by a thug’, Daily Mirror, 14th October 1987.)
